First Time in Istanbul: Plan Your Base, Arrival and First Day

A practical first-visit plan for Istanbul covering airport codes, accommodation location, realistic sightseeing days and reliable sources.

Your first Istanbul plan does not need a long list of sights. It needs an arrival that works, accommodation in the right part of the city and a first day you can complete comfortably. Build those pieces before reserving tightly timed activities.

Before booking: match the base to the trip

Put your main sights, appointments and accommodation candidates on the same map. Historic-peninsula visits, Beyoğlu evenings, Asian-side plans and a western Istanbul exhibition create different transport needs. The official GoTürkiye Istanbul directory is useful for locating destinations.

Priceino Holiday currently offers Kiristalşehir accommodation in western Istanbul. We do not position it as the nearest base to every landmark. A first visit focused on central sightseeing deserves a comparison with accommodation closer to that itinerary.

Before flying: make an arrival card

  • Check whether the ticket says IST or SAW.
  • Save the exact accommodation entrance, Turkish address and booking reference.
  • Confirm check-in timing and how you will get access.
  • Save your transfer plan and an alternative.
  • Keep enough phone battery and offline information to reach the accommodation if connectivity fails.

Our airport guide is specifically for IST and the western accommodation area. Do not apply it unchanged to SAW. Entry requirements depend on nationality and circumstances; check the relevant official authorities before travel rather than relying on an accommodation article.

For day one: choose one area

Start with one cluster of activities and leave room for the outward and return journeys. For example, a historic-peninsula day should be planned around that area rather than combined with multiple distant neighbourhoods simply because they appear on a “top ten” list.

Check each attraction's own site for opening, tickets and visitor rules before booking a timed visit. This guide does not quote entry prices or guarantee access. Religious sites can have visiting arrangements that require planning around their primary use.

Make transport information specific

Use Metro Istanbul for rail information and İETT for bus information. Save the name of your return stop, not just a screenshot of the outward route. If the first connection becomes difficult, simplify the day instead of trying to preserve every activity.

Know what your booking confirms

A property listing is not a confirmed stay. Enter dates and guests, review the quote and terms, and keep the final reservation confirmation. Save the support contact privately. For our collection, How booking works explains the customer flow without requiring you to understand the systems behind it.

Leave your first evening flexible. Once you have seen the entrance, transport connection and local errands for yourself, you can plan the remaining days with fewer assumptions.
